The Bahamas was elected as a member of the Human Rights Council (HRC) for the term 2019-2021.
A notable achievement for The Bahamas and indeed the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) at the Council in 2021 was the election, by acclamation, on 16 December 2020, of H.E. Ms. Keva L. Bain, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of The Bahamas to the United Nations in Geneva, to serve as a Vice-President of the Human Rights Council for the fifteenth cycle (2021). The candidacy of Ambassador Bain was presented by the Group of Latin American and Caribbean States (GRULAC) following GRULAC’s unanimous endorsement. Ambassador Bain thereby became the first Bahamian and the first CARICOM national to serve as a member of the Bureau of the Human Rights Council.

Ambassador Bain was also selected by the President of the Council to serve as the Chair of the Human Rights Council task force on Accessibility.  The Human Rights Council established the Task Force for accessibility for persons with disabilities by resolution A/HRC/RES/16/21 to enhance the participation of persons with disabilities in the work of the Council and of its mechanisms, in accordance with international standards
